why is this valuable?
The basic assumption of TOC applies to any organisation or system and to individuals. Identifying the weak link creates a focus for improvement (you might think of the weak link as a constraint or a lever point). This knowledge enables greater productivity from your most valuable asset: your management team. Focus enables the management team to know better what actions to take, as they have a much clearer idea of WHAT NOT TO DO and what to do! A major error made by many teams is monitoring too many items. Understanding where to focus means that you are able to focus on the few elements that are critical. There is a big danger of focusing on the wrong things when we break organisations down into units. It tends to increase the likelihood that the units will focus on local goals that are not in line with value the company is trying to deliver to its market. The biggest barrier to focus is the belief that any improvement particularly any cost reduction (however measured) is good. FOCUS derived from understanding the weak links or leverage points better clarifies what is good and what is a waste and hence what to measure.
